Cedars School Newport P ell It's My (RMelvin and Janice40thWeddingOOur photographerthMelvin diCon aCedars School was opened on 10th November 1896, when it was known as Bu Street School. The central block was the girls' school (280 pupils), the High Street end was the boys' school (350) and the Silver Street end was the infants (296), giving a grand total of 926 pupils. At the time, the school buildings were regarded as 'state of the art', as shown by this contemporary description in the Croydon's Weekly Advertiser: "The various school rooms are spacious and well lighted and are exceedingly warmed by open fire-places. There is an entire absence of plastering on the walls, and this renders the rooms d and well suited for early occupation. The ventilation is by Boyle's Churts with summer lights for hot weather ventilation. The whole of the fittings are well considered, from the numbered hat and coat hooks to the ink washing troughs. The seats and desks (all dual) have pointed or flap seats and desks, giving space when standing, and room for girls' knees when sewing. There is one feature of importance, and no doubt one which the pupils of the school will thoroughly appreciate, and that is the entire absence of birch-rods. The exterior of the building is treated in the Board School style, with a classic tendency presenting a cheerful appearance of Bath stone and cherry brick. Advantage has also been taken of using the ventilators as distinguishing turrets, that of the girls' school in the central block being a tasteful design, and intended to attract attention by its height, in as much as the buildings are not in a main street. " In 1 973 the senior and junior schools became Cedars County Middle School and the infants school became Cedars County First School. Then in 1990 these two schools amalgamated to become Cedars County Combined School. The school centenary in 1996 was marked by the publication of a special book containing reminiscences of many former pupils, which represented a wonderful window on post-war life in general and school life in particular. This book, and many other memorabilia, will be on display at the museum open day on Saturday 22nd October.
