istling in Stone, Doo ing in Rock An exhibition of contemporary stone carving exploring the theme 'So ness Overcoming Hardness' sculpted from Jurassic Limestone is now on show in Weston Quarry, Woodlands Farm, Weston Underwood as part of the Northamptonshire Open Studios event. The Northamptonshire Open Studios is an some cases to be able to polish it like marble. However the work involved is considerable and polishing can take as long as the initial carving. In addition the finish deteriorates rapidly if the work is positioned outdoors. many various types of limestone di er depending on the proportion of shells and fossils to the calcite. The more shells there are the easier it is to work and the Portland stone is a good example of that. Bath stone has the opposite proportion and is harder and can take a bit of a polish. The stone both in the quarry and in our gardens, is part of the limestone belt that runs diagonally across England from Bristol to the Wash and was laid down when our land mass was in the tropics None of the work in the quarry is on exhibition in the convention sense; this is work in progress. I do hope you will come for a look, but this is not a sculpture park, or an adventure playground; it is a working quarry, an industrial site on private land, and is an intrinsicaf dangerous place. This is not a common colour in limestone, as the creams and bu s usually predominate.
