Exiting the EU
SDavid Pibworth
o here we are, some three months after the historic vote to leave the EU, and those at the top haven’t triggered article 50 yet. Article 50 was put in place to allow a country to leave
the EU. Once it is invoked, the country, in this case us, have two years to negotiate our way out although that time scale can be extended.
I was, and still am, delighted that the UK took the opportunity to get out of this peculiar and dishonest corporate club. The sight of that unelected drunk bloke, Jean-Claude Juncker, poncing around uttering his threats to the UK has really irritated me, but in hindsight I probably have him to thank for helping us get out of the EU mess, as I’m sure many people voted on the basis of his tomfoolery. Two of my favourite statements by old Jean-Claude are “When it gets serious, you have to lie” and “I’m ready to be insulted as being insuf ciently democratic, I am for secret, dark debates”. It should be noted also that he gave an interview to the French newspaper ‘Liberation’ a day or so ago denying that he had a drink problem. And downed four glasses of champagne during the 50 minute lunchtime interview. Yep, this is from the President of the European Commission, the decision maker.
I’m slightly confused as to why our Prime Minister hasn’t triggered Article 50 as yet. Perhaps it’s just to annoy the EU, as they seem to want us out. Perhaps it’s because the UK government are thinking of trying to reverse the decision. Perhaps it’s really because they need more time to see where to go. Who knows? Not me for certain. However I’m quite optimistic as the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn (I suspect he’ll still be there when this comes out) are sensible about the EU. Both of them pretended they were for the EU and kept their heads down during the campaign. Very sensible of them I’d say, and David Cameron would have to agree with me on that...ho, ho, ho. I’m now in a curious position – for the rst time in my life – of being quite happy with our political leaders. I quite like May and I quite like Corbyn and like most people I can’t remember the name of the geezer in charge of the Lib Dems.
I’ve always made it clear that the sole reason I wanted out of the EU was that I think it’s a totally undemocratic, fraudulent, and incompetent organisation and my hope is that with the UK leaving, then others will follow suit and once the barmy Euro currency collapses, the whole of the EU dream will also. Then we can pick up the pieces and start again with trade agreements and work together without all this desperation for political unity, and a load of megalomaniacs wandering around at the top without enough to keep them sensibly occupied. France, Italy and the Netherlands are all calling for a referendum on the EU. The Polish Prime Minster has called for the EU to give back power to Nation states and to make ‘Deep Reforms’. In Germany, left and right wing parties are
