My BOFF Highlights
Best Newcomer
Chegg’s Scotch Eggs - This was Sunday’s breakfast and was absolutely delicious. Deep fried to order, a perfectly runny yolk, crisp breadcrumbs and lovely, well-seasoned sausage meat. About as good as a scotch egg can get.
Best Overall
Wildleaf Stew - We ate all three of Wildleaf’s warming, avour packed stews over the weekend. All served with a square of focaccia, It’s a hard ask to pick my favourite. If pushed, the Italian Sausage and Tuscan Bean ragu just nailed it. So when are you going to open in the evenings Wildleaf? Because with food that good I want to book my table now.
Best Snack
JJEB Farm Goat Samosa - Pastry light as a feather, packed full of perfectly spiced goats meat and peas. Bite sized gorgeousness.
Best Drink
Good Times Café Coffee & JJEB Farm blackberry juice - Couldn’t choose between these two. Good Times Café coffee is spot on. They make one of the best at whites for miles around, and the other half’s black Americano was really good too. The blackberry juice at a £1 a cup was so refreshing and pretty much just crushed blackberries. Simple pleasures.
Best Main Course
OMG Cheese Burger - I do generally avoid burgers. You have to be a very good chef to cook a good one. And mostly, they are quite awful. But I watched OMG with their big fat beef patties being lovingly cooked on the grill and chanced it. With a slab of blue stilton nestled on top and wrapped in a warmed brioche bun it was, easily, the best burger I’ve eaten. Ever.
Best Vegetarian
Amphawan Tofu - I didn’t eat this, but my veggie friend pronounced it the best food she’s ever had at BOFF. That’s good enough for me to add it to the honours list.
Best Sweet Thing
Gabriella’s Biscuit Pic ‘n’ Mix - I don’t normally do sweet but at 16 for £5 it seemed silly not to. Those peach cookies were a delight and the ones I didn’t have room for were polished off in seconds at work.
Best Surprise
Belgian Fries - I’ve not yet been up to the Belgian Fries shop in Yardley. A chip’s just a chip isn’t it? Well apparently not. These are twice fried – the nal fry to order, perfectly coated in just the right amount of salt. Golden, crisp on the outside, soft in the middle. It won’t be long before I’m banging on their door for more.
