The Civil War .... and The Referendum
During the years of 1642 to 1651 there was a Civil War in England. At this time there was a series of armed conflicts between Roundheads and Cavaliers over the manner of its government. This war ended with the parliamentarian victory at the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651.
Newport Pagnell is celebrating its part in the civil war by launching a spectacular re-creation over the August Bank Holiday weekend with the Civil War Weekend promising to be the biggest event in the town for many years with a lot of organisations supporting the occasion.
By the time we are enjoying this event the dust of our other “Civil War” in the UK, the Referendum, should be settled. To be held on 23rd June it will be over and political peace, if that is possible, will have returned to our shores. Who will be in control of those shores of course we do not know at present. Will it be our own Government with the Queen at its helm or will it be the European Union? It would be interesting to hear what the Roundheads and Cavaliers combined would think of our Referendum today. Which sides would they choose? If any. One wonders if in 400 odd years celebrations will be held on the outcome as is happening in Newport Pagnell. So, which way do you think these well known people of our past would vote: Guy Fawkes, Winston Churchill, William Gladstone, Shakespeare, George V, Robbie Burns, Neville Chamberlain, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Sir Isaac Newton, Queen Elizabeth I, Horatio Nelson, Oliver Cromwell, King Alfred the Great, Margaret Thatcher, Queen Victoria, William Wilberforce, Boudicca, Sir Thomas More, Charles Dickens, Aneurin Bevan, Sir William Wallace, Sir Francis Drake, King Arthur, Thomas Paine, Robin Hood, or even Tony Benn. Well just go to our website phoneboxmagazine.com and find out more about these famous people and vote the way you think they would. Just for fun.... Results will be posted next month.
In the meantime, remember you’ll be making history with the use of your vote, and in 400 odd years or more someone might just be celebrating on your choice! Ron Hall, Editor
