Lathbury Church is in Trouble
Lead stolen from the roof
You may be forgiven for not knowing where Lathbury village is, as it’s such a small place with just 38 houses and around 100 residents. But, in fact, it is just one mile north of Newport Pagnell. The Church of All Saints, one of the oldest buildings in North Buckinghamshire, is much loved by the congregation who have lovingly maintained it over the years. However, in July 2015, the peace of the village was broken when thieves stripped the lead from the church roof, laying bare the wooden boards of the chancel. Emergency action was required; plastic sheeting was tted over the affected area with battens. The church architect, Bryan Martin, estimated the cost of repairs at £75,000. This is an enormous burden for a small village – and some money has come from an insurance claim – but they are still making every effort to meet the remaining sum of £45,000 by organising fundraising events.
The rst event will be a concert in Newport Pagnell Parish Church on 23rd April: “Music – As You Like It”. This will be a concert for all ages, featuring Quincidence, a talented wind quintet from the Royal College of Music, Cedars Primary School Choir, MK Acapella and the Diamond School of Performing Arts. Tickets are £8 for adults, or £2 for under- 16s, and are available from Cambourne Travel (Newport Pagnell), CT Wilson’s (Olney), or from Peg Thorn on 07487 531251 or email peg.thorn@hotmail.co.uk.
The Fuchsia Sale this year will be on 21st May, and will include a wedding fayre, vintage teas and craft stalls. This event is free entry. Finally, on 24th and 25th September, there will be an art exhibition in the church. More details to follow on the Lathbury website: lathburyvillage.org.uk.
