Iwent to see the new lm of ‘Dad’s Army’ the other day with some trepidation I should say, hoping that they’d make a good st of it. I’m pleased to say that, in my opinion, they
did. The characterisations were good without the actors trying to just copy the originals. Michael Gambon was especially splendid as the vague Private Godfrey, but then Gambon is always splendid.
The storyline was good and brought in more female roles than the tv series had ever done but it worked in its favour and allowed a terri c line up of British actresses to entertain us as well as re ecting that women most certainly did their bit for the war effort. Ok none of the home guard or the WVS would have fought off the Nazi invasion, but by golly they were all ready to have a go.
I hope it’s brought Dad’s Army to a new generation and that it might encourage writers to realise that there is a place for comedy that doesn’t go out to offend. That’s not to say there isn’t a place for comedy that does offend, I’m a great supporter of that too. We need both.
I know for a fact that the original cast had a blast lming the tv series and it looks as though the new cast did as well. How could you not enjoy
recreating that kind of comedy?
Two of the original players took part in the new lm. Ian Lavendor – originally Pike – played a high ranking of cer and was very good. He couldn’t really play the mummies boy now as he must be around 70, and Frank Williams played the vicar again. You can play vicars at any age it seems.
Frank is 84 now or thereabouts and I thought we’d bring a little bit of Dad’s Army to Olney in April and so we’re bringing Frank to the Carlton House Club on the 17th April at 16.00 to do his talk on being part of the original and the new team.
He’s a delightful man anyway so do turn out to see one of our old style character actors chatting. He’ll answer any questions you might have and we show a little lm of behind the scenes of the original series and it’ll be fun. See the advert for it and ring or email for tickets or get them from Richard at the Club.
This has been a nice article hasn’t it? Next month I think I’ll turn to the EU vote as by that time our MP will have decided which way he will advise us to vote – I think I can guess – and point out the reasons for and against. That should get Ron’s letterbox full again.

Dear RandMresourcing,
I would personally like to thank Rob for the service he provided me with, helping me get my first car. 24 hours after initially contacting Rob he came back to me with lots of car options which he had thoroughly searched the internet for; after choosing the best, he then visited 3 of the cars he had picked out for me; some of which were unsuccessful as he believed they were not good enough for me sacrificing lots of his time in this process. He did not stop until he found a car I would be happy with and would be reliable at the same time.
The service was impeccable and went above and beyond my expectations; the car he got me was a very good car, great condition, and was a lot cheaper than expected. I would definitely not hesitate to contact Rob especially after what he has done, you won’t be disappointed!!
