Everyone at Phonebox Magazine would like to wish all our readers, contributors and advertisers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
With the Christmas period upon us our thoughts turn to presents, and what better way to keep our High Streets alive than by shopping local. We really need to Think Local before we go shopping; so with that in mind Phonebox has an article inside the magazine with some tips and pointers on why this is so important if we want to keep a vibrant local community and not end up with national chains of shops being the only choice. Continuing with our Great War Remembrance theme we have, in our Sports section, the story of Edgar R Mobbs and his wartime efforts, which are to be honoured in a charity Rugby Match at Olney Rugby Club on January 24th 2014. We also have an article about animals in warfare written by Olney’s Mayor Steve Clark. Horses in particular were an amazing help to the war effort and his article
endorses this fact. More stories are coming in from family and friends of past local veterans of WW1 and if you have any history or information about a relative or friend who was involved in the war effort please bring any information into our office where we are compiling a history of locals who were involved in the first world war.
We see BLOT had an early Christmas present with the news that the windfarm application has been shelved, and the Rotary Club of Newport Pagnell also delivered an early Christmas present to Brooklands Day Centre. Well done.
Talking about Christmas presents, I think it’s time to start making my list for Santa, who is in our office replying to your Christmas letters on 17 December, so make sure you get your letters to us before that date so we can get his replies back to you in time for the Christmas Post.
Have a cool yule! (as our younger members of staff would say). Ron Hall, Editor
