Mr Fothergill’s Nation Of Gardeners
Agarden in Olney is playing a key part in helping create the country’s first ever growing map of mainland Britain.
Mr Fothergill’s Nation of Gardeners has recruited amateur gardeners in all of the
mainland British regions. Each month they will receive free collections of flower, vegetable and herb seeds, plants or bulbs.
Diana Herniman from Olney in Buckinghamshire has just received her first delivery from Mr Fothergill’s Seeds. The first batch includes sweet peas, broad beans and garlic. John Fothergill, joint managing director of Mr Fothergill’s Seeds Limited, explains: “With our constantly and rapidly changing weather it is important to understand how gardening and growing conditions change across the country at different times of the year.
“We will be asking our nation members to plant their monthly collection at a time they consider best suits local growing conditions. They will report back their results to us on social media. The different growth and germination rates across the country will quickly build up our growing map which will become an important tool for gardeners across the nation.” “I can’t wait to get started,” says Diana. “It is very exciting to be part of this unique exercise and the growing map is something that will be constantly changing.”
