Combined Churches of Olney
Palm Sunday united service
Every year the combined churches in Olney get together to walk down the High Street and have an open air service on the market place to mark Palm Sunday which is the beginning of ‘Holy Week’, it remembers the time when in the last week of his ministry Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and the crowds gathered to welcome him. This year, however, the weather was so icy and cold that it would not have been safe to walk down the pavements, so there was an impromptu indoor service in the Baptist Church, where Rev Claire Wood gave the message, youth worker Nic Blackmore did an all age talk and Rev Ian Field led the prayers. After the service everyone commented on how wonderful the singing was and the wonderful sense of unity and friendship, and that we must worship together more often. It really was a fantastic morning,
and a great sign of the churches unity.
Easter week meditations: we had a wonderful opportunity to quietly reflect on meals that Jesus shared with people and the changes that took place in their lives, an oasis of calm and peace in the busyness of life, Margaret Saunders, an elder of the Baptist Church guided our thoughts from the Bible and gave us space and time to meet with God in a very special way.
Good Friday united service: Cowper United Reformed Church hosted the united Good Friday service with the Baptist Church; Mr R Blackie led our worship, and Rev Ian Field from the Baptist Church gave a powerful message about how God not only understands our suffering, but on the cross has redeemed us. We had a warm time of fellowship and friendship together.
Easter morning and evening celebrations: the highlight of Holy Week is Easter day when we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus - many people commented on the model of the empty tomb outside the Baptist Church, when
the stone was rolled away. There was a real note of celebration a nd triumph in the singing, and we thank God for the real hope we have because Jesus is risen from the dead. It is a thrill to know that Christians all over the world and throughout the centuries have celebrated this wonderful news - the grave is not the end, God offers a new and eternal life to all who will put their trust in Jesus. Looking ahead: at the Baptist Church we are continuing our series in Luke’s gospel and we are looking at the well loved parable of the two lost sons - also known as the prodigal son, one son is lost in rebellion and the other lost in religion, and the father goes to each to bring them home and into the celebration - there is so much to encourage and challenge us in this parable, why not come along and learn something new about yourself, life and God? A warm welcome is waiting for you.
Come along - we’d love to get to know you.
