The Desecration of a Public Area
Dear Editor
RE: Proposed Car Park at the East Street Boundary of the Football Club
There is already a large free public car park beside the Rugby club within 100 yards of the proposed new car park. It has space for over 120 vehicles and is under-used every day of the week with very few cars parked there, even on Market Days. It is covered by lighting and a cctv camera. If the lighting is insufficient and the car park is too dark as reported by John Sharp (Mercury in March) then the problem should be addressed by Olney Town Council.
Spending money on a new public car park within 100 yards of a perfectly adequate one is
not the answer to the problem, which is a need for extra overflow parking on match days at weekends, particularly on Sundays, when a number of sports take place all together, especially during the football and rugby seasons – days on which unregulated car parking has been a long running problem.
Along with ample free long-term parking and improved signage already in place, there is plenty of on-road parking available all along East Street during the week, which is known to and made use of by local townspeople. Further improved signposting woul be a helpful gide to others for the short walk to and from the town centre through Millwards Entry to the High Street.
To destroy an open space bounded and shaded by three beautiful trees in order to cram 36 cars close up to the football pitch and for OTC only to consider the protection of the tree roots as an afterthought is not acceptable – and a matter for concern which would seem only recently to have been recognized. (Mercury in February). This is an ideal flat recreation space used
on a regular basis for football, ricket, rounders and picnics – especially in the summer. With
the football pitch dur to be fenced off permanently there will be less public space for open
play close to the town centre. Adjacent to East Street and easily accessible, without the need
to trek across football and cricket pitches to look for green space, it is an ideal and well used recreation area.
May I suggest that money would be better spent on the reconfiguration of High Street parking. Marked spaces would tidy up sloppy and wasteful parking.
I hope that the proposed survey by OTC to discuss this costly exercise will be extensively advertised, and opponents to the desecration of this well used public area will then be able to voice their objections to the stealing of some of the town’s recreation ground.

Re: The April Car Parking Scheme
Now Olney and Neighbourhood will Set an Example. Neat Solution for Everyone. MHM
Dear Editor
“When I wrote my article in Councillor Corner for last months magazine I quoted information in good faith and accurate as I had received it.
As many of you will have realised, it said that many residents of Newport Pagnell will have seen road improvement. This didn’t happen as expected.
I am sorry for any inconvenience caused. Paul Alexander – Lib. Dem. Councillor Newport Pagnell North
Correction
In last month’s Phonebox the letter from Mary Swallow regarding Parking in Olney stated “the car park run by the Rugby Club” this should have read “the car park by the Rugby Club”.
Apologies for any problems causes. [Ed]
