CARLY WEBB AMBITION FULFILLED
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
NEW MEMBER WELCOMED
GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE
THE ROTARY
OF NEWPORT PAGNELL CLUB
At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Newport Pagnall, Mary-Jane Willows, the Chief executive of a Milton Keynes based Charity ACME (Association of young people with ME) gave a presentation about a trip that Carly Webb, a young lady whose family live in Newport Pagnell, made to a hospital in Uganda.
Earlier this year the Newport Pagnell Club, along with other donors/ sponsors, was pleased to help fund this trip and Carly’s story is truly inspiring, She has dream of becoming a doctor and such stories make our fundraising activities all the more worthwhile.
The severity of her illness made her trip look highly unlikely but with her determination to travel and the last minute agreement of her doctors she was told with short notice that she could travel, leaving very little time to raise the required funding.
With help from the charity she was able to fund the trip and joined other young medical students already at the hospital west of Kampala and she particularly enjoyed using some of her newly acquired medical skills in the rudimentary conditions of the ‘bush’ hospital helping its midwives to improve their resuscitation skills in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
We were pleased to hear that earlier in the summer

doctor and is currently working as a junior doctor at St Georges Hospital in London.
The Rotary Club of Newport Pagnell was delighted to welcome a new member to add to their numbers. At a recent meeting, President Richard Coleman inducted Robin Luper as a new Rotarian, in the presence of Rotary District 1260 District Governor, Debbie Hodge.
Robin is a resident of Olney and married to Karina.
He gave a short speech expressing his delight at being given the opportunity to serve the local, national and international community with such a respected and recognised organisation.
The club also recently inducted the Mayor of Newport Pagnell, Wendy Egan, as an Honarary Member of the Newport Pagnell Club.
Phonebox readers may recall the long running appeal earlier this year for applicants to participate in Rotary International’s educational programme, Group Study
The exchange is with Rotary District 9920, Auckland, New Zealand, and out of a total of twenty two applications from various sources, the team has now been chosen and is pictured on this page. All of the successful candidates are within the required
educational, literacy and numeracy vocation, and will travel out to New Zealand – all expenses paid – in early April for a four week duration.
The team will experience a concentrated and varied programme of vocational, educational, cultural and social events, and will be accommodated with Rotary families during their trip. (Picture shows the team leader, Tracy Maryan, from the Rotary Club of Hitchin Mimran, and team members Ami Jeffreys, Ann-Marie Fayne, Maria Villlarico, Olli Moore and Sughra Asghar.)
The Rotary Club of Newport Pagnell meets every Wednesday at the Swan Revived Hotel, Newport Pagnell. We would be delighted to see men and women who have time to spare, would like to
make new friends, and are interested in making a difference locally, nationally and internationally. club and share in the celebrations, then get in touch and come along and meet us. You would be made very welcome. We currently have 21 members – and have one or two new potential members in the pipeline.
