The important thing within the first 24-48 hours is to follow the RICE method; Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. This will often help facilitate recovery and allow the body to start to heal itself. Physiotherapy can be helpful in reaching a diagnosis, giving a prognosis and speeding up rehabilitation and return to everyday activities or sport. Acute injuries can become chronic if not managed correctly in the early stages. Treatments such as soft tissue work, massage, mobilisations and ultrasound or acupuncture can be useful. Advice and exercises to reduce stiffness and improve strength and balance will also be of benefit.

Physiotherapy for Strains and Sprains
Hello, I am Eileen Lewis, I have a BSc in Physiotherapy and also am a qualified Acupuncturist with over 20 years experience. In this months edition with the Football and Rugby season well under way I am going to discuss acute soft tissue injuries and how Physiotherapy may help to facilitate recovery.
An acute soft tissue injury occurs suddenly, whilst doing an everyday task or during sport. It may result in damage to muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves or connective tissue and even bone. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, bruising, loss of movement and perhaps an inability to put weight onto the affected area. Common injuries are, for example, knee or ankle sprains, pulling a muscle such as the hamstrings or calf, deep bruising to the thigh muscle (quadriceps), and shoulder or wrist sprains.
