A Partnership for Life Changes
Lions Clubs in the UK have a number of partnerships is place with organisations which aim to help others less fortunate than ourselves and one of
these, our TACADE partnership develops resources for
the use of schools and similar bodies, to promote the
health and well-being of children and young people locally, nationally and internationally.
TACADE has been functioning for over 40 years and in addition to Lions support, they receive considerable funding from large blue chip Corporates, Charities, Trusts and Individuals enabling it to ensure that resources are constantly updated and relevant for the subject being dealt with.
Recently, TACADE approached Lions with a proposal for a new resource which they felt required development.
The proposition centred around the fact that everyone
will experience change and loss throughout their lives,
such as a family breakdown or the death of a relative or friend. School communities have to support children who have faced loss in one of its myriad forms and it was felt that there was a lack of an appropriate resource which teachers could use in such situations.
Would Lions help fund such a resource? The answer was a resounding ‘Yes’ and so the clubs in the UK underwrote the cost of “Life Changes”, which has now been designed, tested and is now available for schools which wish to purchase a copy.
This resource adopts both a proactive and a reactive approach to loss and change and will enable staff to make an immediate considered response to a loss and change situation, including bereavement.
It is a practical working document with 'tried and tested' practical ideas, including ideas for activities, linked to curriculum areas, and assemblies; poems, letters, writing and artwork; teaching staff, governor, parent/carer training workshop/self awareness session; case studies; and a comprehensive resource list. In addition there is a wealth of background information for teaching staff about aspects of loss, change and bereavement and we are delighted that a small investment by our Club has helped bring this valuable asset to schools throughout the UK.
Just another example of what Lions do with the money YOU give us.
Newport Pagnell
Probus Club
Last Summer, we decided to allow lady members to join our club and their inclusion has been a roaring success, with roughly one third of our members now ladies – we should like to get up to 50%. Our increase in membership has meant that our previous meeting place proved inadequate for our growing numbers and we are now meeting in The Carlton House Club on Olney High Street, which will allow us to increase our membership from the current 45.
We meet at around 12.15p.m. for a 1.45 p.m luncheon and then have a speaker. The forthcoming topics are:
• “Setting up and running MK’s Young People’s Befriending Scheme” – Brian Breacher
• “Honours and Awards in the Services” – Colonel John Jammes.
• “Owning a Boat” – Brian Wilson
Membership is open to any retired or semi-retired professional or business person. Annual membership fee is £10 and meals cost £7 for two courses. We are beginning to arrange a number of club outings, with a visit to Wisley Gardens and to the John Rutter Christmas Celebration in the Albert Hall, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bach Choir, these being the most popular.
If you are interested in joining, please contact Brian Wilson, Secretary, on 01234 712437 or e-mail him on b.wilson2@virgin.net
NEWPORT PAGNELL WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
At the end of March, a team of three members of Newport Pagnell Women’s Institute travelled to Buckingham to take part in the Inter-County Quiz.
A total of 28 teams competed, answering ten questions in each of ten rounds, with subjects as diverse as Geography, Literature, Music from the Movies, and Advertising Slogans.
At the end of a fun evening, when the final scores were added up, Newport Pagnell came 13th; not a bad result.
The April meeting brought a visit by two ladies from a perfume shop called ‘Love Lana’, based in Olney.
The owner had spent several years working

Sample cards impregnated with perfume were passed round for people to sniff, and this created a lovely fragrance in the room.
The raffle was won by Hannah Jones, 2nd Zena Unsworth, both visitors.
The competition was won by Jean Downing, 2nd Pat Cutts, 3rd Kathleen Allwood.
Newport Pagnell Women’s Institute meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Royal British Legion Club, and are always delighted to welcome new members. On 10thMay Resolutions will be discussed, followed by a Beetle Drive. On 14th June John Cornwall asks ‘Why not Bulgaria?’
Starting with perfumes, the range soon expanded to include shower gels, hand lotions and scented candles. All the products are pure and do not contain parabens or sulphates, and in the main supplied by English manufacturers.
