Parking your car is in the news this month, not only at the Co-op in Olney but read the article by our motoring correspondent on page 40 about the fun in London that you can also run into with our four wheeled friends! Newport Pagnell’s possible new Tesco supermarket brings parking into sharp relief as well with suggestions that the 230 space car park may well be inadequate (see letter inside). So it’s not just Olney and London that have a problem!
Anyway, nice to see that David (of The Pibworth Column fame) was offered a refund when he received a parking ticket for his misdemeanor in Stanley Court. And with the Town Council getting involved there seems to have been a change of policy on the parking policy for evening and late night shoppers. The problem is, WE who actually rent our units from the Co-op have, as yet, not been notified or even asked our opinion on the matter by anyone.
The only answer therefore was to phone the Town Council and the Coop and find out why we had not been consulted; (thanks for the Coop number, David). We have pointed out to both that the cameras give us, and those around us, 24 hour security as they monitor all traffic coming in and out of Stanley Court. Is this to be changed also?
When we were made aware of the problems the parking restrictions created we came up with a solution: we offered, and was taken up on, a free fax service the next morning to “Parking HQ” of any cars parked in the evening over or near the two hour period, thus stopping any tickets and retaining our security; job done, we thought.
As most people know there have been several burglaries in the town and Stanley Court has not been left out. The Co-op has been robbed on several occasions and well as the Spice Garden.
The possibility of taking away any form of overnight security is something that should be discussed more fully before any action or decision is taken. We are not against the idea of allowing cars to park for longer than the permitted time after 6pm, but let us look at the consequences of our actions before we jump in for what is perceived to be the greater good for all.
We, as our motoring correspondent has done in London, will keep you informed on how to avoid the perils of parking in Olney . . .
At time of going to press we await a reply on the question as to whether cars would still be monitored between 6pm and 6am. Ron Hall, Editor
