How old is too old for
Combined Churches of Olney
Hosting the Hustings
On Thursday April 22 Olney Baptist Church played host to a hustings event for five parliamentary candidates for the North Milton Keynes constituency. Representatives from all the major parties were present to face a packed floor (and balcony!) of almost 150 constituents. Under the strict time-keeping of Bev Field in the Chair, candidates had three minutes to speak on why they believed they should be elected before answering questions on topics of national interest such as education and the NHS as well as more local issues effecting Olney and Milton Keynes. Given the setting, it was perhaps not surprising that questions included matters of international aid, tax cuts for married couples, Bishops in the House of Lords, views on abortion and the role of faith schools. The two hours seemed to fly by with a closing sequence of “quick fire” questions to which the candidates had only a strict 30 seconds in which to give their answer; perhaps the largest chuckle came when the Green Party candidate affirmed that he wouldn’t be requiring the full 30 seconds to give his view on whether he supported the idea of a third runway at Heathrow!
Cosmetic Surgery?
One of Olney’s older residents, who watches you pass her by on the High Street, is feeling her age. She has worked hard over many years providing comfort, support, fun and laughter to many people, young and old, in Olney and beyond. All that work though has taken its toll, all the days spent standing in the hot sun waiting to welcome people, the nights in the cold frost not to mention the rain which has lashed against her over the decades have all meant that the wrinkles are now showing and she needs a face lift. They don’t come cheap though, especially when you are 130 years old. Her immediate family think that they need to raise nearly £15,000 to make her smile again. If you feel you can help get them started please support the Table Top Sale being held on the 26th June. The lady herself – The United Reformed Church, will be hosting the event between 10am and 4pm. If you would like a table (£5) please contact Ken Brown on 01234 712115. If you would just like to come and help support the event tea and yummy homemade cakes will be available along side the tables.
