OLNEY AND AFRICA – PAST AND PRESENT
In celebration of Black History Month 2009
Have you ever stopped to consider just how long this small market town in rural Buckinghamshire has been associated with Africa and in particular the West African country of Sierra Leone? Well over 200 years now. Amazing?
It is well over 200 years ago that the Rev John Newton took up a position of Curate in
Olney and his association with West Africa and the slave trade is well documented. This reformed slave trader and supporter of the Abolitionists wrote several hymns still sung in Churches today including the world renowned ‘Amazing Grace’. The impact of reformers such as Newton was both profound and dramatic and still reverberates around the world today.
The Olney-Newton Link was formed to pick up this thread of connection between Olney and Sierra Leone and in particular the area of Newton which is accepted as being named after Olney’s famous curate. We also have Advantage Africa in Olney now, a charity concerned with supporting projects in Kenya and Uganda. Both charities believe strongly that our young people today are global citizens and must be educated as such by being made aware not only of the historic background of our dealings with Black Africa but also to the many problems faced by African countries in today’s world.
October is designated nationally as Black History Month so what are we going to do to mark the occasion?
Several events will be happening in Olney:
G In the 3 Hares Gallery at the Cowper and Newton museum there will be a joint exhibition illustrating the work being done by The Olney-Newton Link and Advantage Africa. Entrance will be through the museum where there is also a room dedicated to the life and work of John Newton.
G Olney Infant School will be holding their annual Africa Week starting on October 19th
G The children at Olney Middle School will be marking the event in several ways.
G There will be photographic displays in Words Bookshop and Olney Library along with special book promotions on African themes.
G During half term week, beginning on October 26th there will be a display of the link between the schools in Olney and Newton in the Olney Centre.
G A special celebration is being planned at Sutcliff Baptist Church on 9th October. This will be a free screening of the film Amazing Grace, starting at 7.30pm.
