Olney and Africa
Olney’s links with Africa are well known as a result of John Newton’s vital contribution to ending the transatlantic slave trade and the town named after him in Sierra Leone. His friend William Cowper’s poem ‘Pity for poor Africans’ is a call for justice and equality with people in Africa that still rings true today.
Today, Olney is home to two charities supporting development projects in Africa and promoting educational exchange between communities. To celebrate Black History Month, these two organisations, the Olney-Newton Link and Advantage Africa, are together staging October’s exhibition in the Three Hares Gallery at the Cowper and Newton Museum. Entitled ‘Olney and Africa, Past and Present’, the exhibition promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of how Cowper and Newton’s call to end exploitation of people in Africa and work in partnership with them is being fulfilled by these two small but dynamic Olney-based charities.
