Sonic Boom Six!
In April I went away to Orlando with my family for the week, and although the holiday was wonderful, it came in sync with nine-hours-of-leg-squashingly- boring flights. Luckily my mum had anticipated the hours of dullness we were going to encounter and as we were packing, she handed me two books by “Alexandra Potter”.
Often, when bands try to blend a mixture of genres to their music, the final effect is still as “ordinary” as when they started. This is not the case with Sonic Boom Six. The bands genre can be classed as anything from ska, to punk, to hip-hop, to reggae and this sound can alternate within moments, creating a very edgy, daring and highly original effect.
I had not heard of this author before as her books have only been published fairly recently. With exams to prepare for, I have not had much time to relax with a book recently, but with nine hours to kill I decided to give it a go, and was gripped within the first paragraph. I began to whizz through the first book “Who’s That Girl?” and was utterly enthralled. Over the holiday I was walking up and down the stairs reading, sitting in the car reading, and laying by the pool reading!
These novels are hilarious and Alexandra Potter seems to have created a new kind of Chick-lit featuring a slight fantasy twist in each storyline.
BOOK ONE: “Who’s That Girl?” is about Charlotte Merryweather; founder and owner of highly successful Merryweather PR. Charlotte however, did not used to be so organised! Somehow, travelling back in time and meeting herself when she was 21 she takes the opportunity to give her younger self advice on clothing - “back away from those PVC trousers”, health - “wear sunscreen” and of course romance - “He’s the one – don’t let him get away” All of this with some surprising consequences....
The exhilarating live performance left me feeling the need to invent words such as “bop-able” and “ska-tastic” to describe the overall effect the music has!
Anyway, when the band played supporting “The Beat” at Northampton Roadmender in March, I managed to get an interview with them and as I crammed into the backstage area and perched on the arm of a sofa I asked my few questions- so here they are with the basic answers! (I think I should get a Katrina x Dictaphone!)
