Plant of the Month Geranium himalayense ‘Gravetye’
One of my favourite hardy geraniums is this wonderful rich blue cultivar. It has large flowers with a purplish centre, standing proudly above the foliage, which create a haze of colour during early summer.
It is useful as groundcover as the neatly cut leaves form clumps 30cm high and 60cm wide. Flowering over a long period, it can also be encouraged to flower again later in the season, by trimming the foliage right back after flowering, which also creates fresh new leaves.
It seems very harsh at the time, but you will be rewarded second time round when other perennials are looking tired. This geranium prefers a sunny position with a well-drained but moist soil.
