Update on Anna’s progress towards the 2010 Winter Paralympics
In last July’s Phonebox Magazine we featured Anna Turney’s quest for competing in Vancouver at the 2010 Winter Paralympics. Here is an update of her progress.
My skiing is developing well. Unfortunately I haven’t achieved the results I’d hoped for but have learned a great deal. Training in Winter Park,
Colorado, was excellent and I won my first medals – Silver, in Kimberley Super G, followed by a bronze in the Park City GS NorAms.
Racing for GB at the World Championships in Korea was awe inspiring. It was incredible to be racing the top skiers from 25 different nations and invaluable pre-Paralympics experience to be competing at such a big event. I came 4th in the GS but messed up the slalom. Hearing the national anthem played after the winners had received their medals sends shivers down my spine. Sitting in the start with a TV camera in my face as I try to focus is certainly a new experience!
This summer I’m hoping to train and race for two months in New Zealand, as cheaply as possible but it’s financially a challenge so I’m looking for sponsors to work with.
I’m currently in Whistler, training with the GB team and familiarizing myself with the race run for the Paralympics next year, fingers crossed. I will then return to Winter Park, for more training and end of season races.
