difficulties) to take a job within their local community. As for the price of Special K (as quoted by one correspondent) – the price in Tesco today is £2.88, so I imagine it was a special offer price quoted by Martin Willis – and that’s in a Tesco Extra store – I wouldn’t expect Tesco Express stores (with their smaller product range and higher distribution costs) to match the pricing in the larger superstores.
Mark Wilson, Olney Dear Editor
Phillippa in Olney (March issue) is not the only customer to dislike ‘piped music’ in supermarkets. I too shop at Olney Market for exactly the reasons she gives but I am now also able to shop at the Olney Co-op without the constant distraction of piped music.
I could have chosen not to shop at all at the Olney Co-op but, as I have been a lifetime supporter of the Co-operative movement, I did not want to tranfer totally to Sainsbury’s, Tesco or Waitrose who do not have ‘piped music’ during the day. After speaking to other customers in the Olney Co-op over a few weeks, I found that they too disliked the constant music although none of us objected to hearing the adverts, info on special offers, etc., broadcast over the PA system. The fact that other customers felt as I did gave me the courage to take it further. I was put in touch with Mark Rogers the Operations Manager responsible for the Olney Co-op who could not have been more courteous and helpful. I now have permission to speak to the staff at the Olney Co-op, who were similarly courteous and helpful, and to have no music whilst I shop. What a difference it makes! In this technologically expert, computer facilitated, day and age there is no reason why systems cannot be set up to screen out the music but leave the ads and announcements in.
Other Olney Co-op customers who feel as I do might also wish to contact Mark Rogers if they wish to shop peacefully. The Olney store has his postal address and his email address.

ORGANIST & CHOIR LEADER VACANCY
St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church Olney is seeking to appoint an Organist and Choir leader. We are an active parish with strong musical expectations, at ease with both traditional and contemporary music. We have a small but dedicated and able choir with weekly anthems and sung Eucharist. Your work will involve the oversight, with the Incumbent, of all music related matters and development in the parish. The church has a fine two manual organ, with 24 speaking stops, built by JJ Bins in 1907 using his patented tubular pneumatic action. The organ was completely restored in 2005.
RSCM rates negotiable plus fees.
