costumes specific to which village their from. We even saw someone, maybe a witchdoctor, selling items that he first put a live turtle on top of. Very strange and probably cruel too. We spent a few hours there, buying a few souvenirs for us and our families before we made it to Panajachel to view the beautiful Lake Atitlan with three volcanoes surrounding it. Unfortunately the rain caught us, so in the evening we all made a group meal and had a party in our villa.
The next day we decided not to go on the boat trip of the lake and instead wandered
around the little market town, before making another group meal for some of us in the evening. Luckily when we left the next day, the sky had cleared and we got to see the three volcanoes better and see how beautiful the lake really was.
After another three hour hot and sweaty chicken bus ride (luckily we got seats this time!) we made it to Antigua. We had a big goodbye party for the six people
leaving, in
the theme of
going out separately guys and girls and meeting up later (as a second stag and hen party for a couple getting married in Fiji a week after). That was a brilliant night where we even had mascot goldfish along for the ride!
For some silly reason we had opted for a one hour uphill trek to a volcano base the next afternoon instead of the day before. So very hung- over, we all proceeded to
attempt to get to the

base of this volcano. After a knackering journey we finally made it, actually feeling better! Then we got to walk across the volcanic rock, and we could actually see the lava underneath. There were points when it was unbearably hot and you couldn’t stand there - one guy even burnt his leg hairs!
Our guide showed us how hot it was by holding a stick down a crack in the rock where it immediately started to smoke and then set on fire. So we all got out our marshmellows and roasted them on sticks, before heading back down the hill and onto Antigua again.
A brilliant time in Central America, but not over yet. Next we will be onto Honduras and Costa Rica. K
