Local garden designer set for
national recognition
A garden by local garden designer, Sue Gilbert, has been selected to feature as a show garden at the prestigious BBC Gardeners’ World Live Show. The show, which takes place 11-15 June at the NEC, is considered one of the key national events in the Royal Horticultural Society’s diary.
Sue drew inspiration from her sponsor, Radlett Preparatory School, and has designed a garden with children in mind, entitled ‘A Sense of Curiousity’.
“This has been a great privilege” said Sue, “not only am I presenting a show garden, but afterwards it will be moved to the school grounds and will be there permanently.”
“The inspiration really came from the children. I wanted to reflect how nature can also be a school of education, and hopefully children will be able to study and interact with the garden.” She added.
The garden features simple principles of geometry within a stimulating garden environment. An interactive table, low level seating and different hard and soft landscaping encourage children to come into the garden. It is child friendly and, in a fitting tribute to the school, the plants echo their uniform colours.
The School Principle Wayne Warren said: “We are absolutely delighted with the garden Sue has designed. At The Radlett Preparatory School we promote a caring, happy and stimulating environment and this garden is an extension of that philosophy.” He added, “We are extremely proud that Sue’s design has been selected for such a high profile event.”
Making sure that the region is well represented, Sue turned to local landscape construction company MTH Landscapes to build the garden at the NEC. Sue has worked jointly with Michael Hannelly, owner of MTH, for over five years. “I have every confidence that Michael and his dedicated team will deliver everything I have asked for in this design.” Sue concluded.
You can see Sue at the Milton Keynes Garden Show, 28-30 March, in Middleton Hall.
