Aston drive cash to save road deaths in China
The record-setting Aston Martin which became the first car to cross the new Asian Highway was the unusual chief guest at a presentation on Friday 7 March in Newport Pagnell, Bucks.
Driven by British adventurers Richard Meredith and Phil Colley, the V8 Vantage completed the 10,000-mile journey from Tokyo to London via Istanbul in August, raising 83,000 euros (£63,230) for UNICEF, the children’s charity, to help save young lives on the roads of China.
The cheque was presented to Alyrene Rosser, UNICEF’s Fundraising Initiatives Officer in the UK, by Richard Meredith at the Swan Revived Hotel in the presence of the Mayor and Mayoress of Milton Keynes (Cllr Mike Barry and Mrs Cheryl Barry), the Mayor of Newport Pagnell (Cllr Simon Baines), and a large gathering of corporate sponsors and guests.
The money will be used to improve road safety education and awareness in and around Beijing where every day up to 100 children are killed or maimed – often as they walk or cycle to school – on the city’s increasingly busy roads.
Richard, who lives in Newport Pagnell, said the appeal response after the drive had been “Simply wonderful.” He added: “It shows that people really care about the safety of children – no matter where they are from or what language they speak. It’s been a fantastic encouragement to find so many people wanting to share in this cause of common humanity.”

Dear Mr Honess and friends who contributed to this wonderful initiative
Thank you so very much for making this happen.
With this generous contribution, UNICEF- China can expand its child injury prevention programme substantially. This relatively new programme is of increasing importance in China, where the major causes of death amongst children beyond the newborn period are now injury and accidents such as drowning, road accidents and falls (please see my attached graph). Our surveys have confirmed not only the problem of death and disability caused by injury amongst children, but also the enormous associated socio-economic costs.
Our programme activities include educating parents and community leaders on simple and low cost means of avoiding accidental death or injury, establishing standards for schools and communities (including for safety on the roads), and developing information systems (reporting on rates and causes of school
