Christmas gifts
There is always an array or ‘Gardeners gifts’ available this time of year, and many of them toiletry based! Although great for pampering, for the true gardener a more practical gift is well received, and I thought I’d share some of the ideas and gifts I have received over the years.
A garden diary is indispensible – looking back to when you really planted those tomato seeds last year, or when the garden was lacking colour makes fascinating reading and for planning the year to come. A simple kneeler pad, not the prettiest gift but used every day

by all the Toddington Manor gardeners, I am sure will be gratefully received.
Seeds for unusual vegetables or flowers are great stocking fillers or try a gift voucher for seed catalogues if you haven’t a clue what you are buying! Membership to a gardeners club or charity will be used in the 12 months ahead, and those that include entry to gardens are great for gaining inspiration for your own garden. A living plant or tree, especially those with winter interest are an unusual idea but are definitely the ‘green’ present, as even the wrapping paper can be composted.
And lastly, there are many garden courses for just one day on either general gardening or more specific subjects that can be given as unusual presents. Just type ‘gardening courses’ into Google on the internet to find locally run courses. q

Olney Community Celebrates Christmas
The Cowper Memorial Church, Olney is holding a ‘Community Christmas Celebration’ at the church on Sunday 16th December. The church has invited the members of a number of local clubs and societies to attend the event. Church elder, Paul Steadman explained, “When my fellow church elder, Pauline Jay, suggested the idea the church elders all thought that it was an excellent idea, and a great way for us to celebrate the joy of Christmas and involve the local community.”
The church has asked each group to suggest a favourite Christmas carol for all to sing, or for a seasonal poem to be read by a member of their group during the event. Groups that will be attending include Olney Town Council, Friends of the Cowper & Newton Museum, Olney Senior Citizens, The Cowper & Newton Society, Olney Camera Club, Olney Historical Society, Olney Gardening Club and Olney Chamber of Trade.
The celebrations start at 3.30pm and Mulled Wine and Mince Pies will be served afterwards. Admission is free and there will be a collection in aid of Willen Hospice. So why not bring the whole family and join in the spirit of Christmas. q
