Pancake Day 2008
By the time you read this Pancake Day 2008 will only be two months away, on February 5th. Easter is almost as early as it can be next year which in turn brings Shrove Tuesday and the start of Lent to early February.
This means the Pancake Race Committee have had to get on with preparations for Olney’s most famous event. As always the most important requirement for a successful day is a good turnout of ladies from Olney to keep alive the tradition, join in the fun and give themselves the opportunity to win some valuable prizes.
Our main Pancake Race sponsors, Francis Jackson Homes Ltd, have a full two page spread in this month’s Phonebox (pages 56-57) – please take time to read about the race entry details and the free entry prizegiving party at the Working Mens Club in the evening where the web link-up will go live with Liberal when their race finishes.
Any ladies who want some help to train and get fit for the race may like to contact Deidre Bethune on 01234 712044 and join the Olney Runners. But please don’t let anyone be put off joining in without any preparation – its primarily a fun day for all culminating in the Shriving Service after the race in the Parish Church where many of the favourite Olney Hymns are sung and next year the Bishop of Oxford will be with us to share his thoughts on Shriving and the Lenten period leading up to Easter.
So the important thing is if you want to run in the race collect your entry from Nat West Bank and when completed return it to the bank.
For everyone – put Feb 5th in your diary and come and support Olney’s ancient tradition and make it an enjoyable day for all.
Tony Evans, Pancake Race Committee Chair
