Wollaston Carnival
The Carnival Committee would like to thank everyone who helped in anyway at this years Carnival. We hope that you all had an enjoyable afternoon until the rain arrived and feel that it makes all our hard work worthwhile for such a unique village event.
We knew that our luck would run out with the weather one day, but it seemed that all the rain we had missed over the years had saved itself for that afternoon. I am sure that many events up and down the country have been disrupted by the weather during May, June or July as we have had an unusually high rainfall. It had all started so well, with many villagers watching the parade wend its way down to the Playing Fields from the school in Irchester Road. This year's parade included the usual mix of floats, a marching band, Storm Cheerleading Team, various walking groups and vintage vehicles, as well as the best float winners the Wollaston and Strixton Pre-School and best walkers the Busy Bees Playgroup.
Once the parade and many followers had arrived at the Playing Fields, Arnold Peters (who plays Jack Woolley in the Archers) carried out the official opening. This signalled the start of events in the arena, which was begun by an excellent display from the Storm Cheerleading Team and the Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers Marching Band. It was at this point that the rainstorm hit, unfortunately causing an abrupt halt and then the cancellation of the rest of the programme. We had produced a Programme of Events again to give people some idea of what was happening and when, again our thanks for this professional looking document must go to Pips Design for design and artwork, Arkle Print Limited for printing, WASNAV for distribution and John Hardaker for the procession map.
Besides events in the arena, there was also Graham Sargeant, Magical Entertainer, Fairground Rides and Stalls, Dog Show
arena, a fire engine, trailer rides, cream teas, etc. We must also not forget the many stalls from various local organisations. We do thank you again for all your support and hope you had a good day, before the rain.
This year again we had to organise the marshalling of the parade ourselves and owe a big thank you to the many people who volunteered to help stop the traffic, so that the parade could pass through without trouble. If not for your help the parade would probably not happen, as the police would not allow it to leave. So thank you once again and we hope that you will volunteer again next year (if not, we have your names and addresses on file!). Our thanks also to all
who helped direct the traffic into the car parking area, then stayed on to get them off again, I think that everybody made it in the end. We did at least manage to do the Grand Draw, with various prizes going to a record 55 lucky ticket holders. K
