I have just read the letter from the man who discovered he had prostate cancer (September Phonebox). It really made me cry and I will tell you why.
Three years ago my husband who was then 69 years old went to see his doctor and told him he was having problems passing urine. His doctor said: “You’re getting old, what do you expect?” A year later when the problem still persisted my husband went and had a private consultation. The doctor he saw that time immediately booked appointments for blood tests etc. and it was diagnosed he had prostate cancer. His treatment was injections and his PS| reading gradually went down.
The trouble was the cancer then went to his lungs, his liver, lymph glands, bones and finally his brain. He died last year after a very traumatic time and I still blame the first GP who completely ignored what my husband was telling him. I must add that at the time we lived in Hertfordshire. I don’t want to blacken any local doctor’s name.
I’m not writing this to frighten anyone, just to say don’t let your doctor ignore any symptoms you may have. The tests are very simple and I feel certain that if that first doctor had acted as he should my husband would still be enjoying his retirement with me.
After the diagnosis both my husband and I wrote to the practice manager and also to the medical council complaining about his treatment and although sympathetic noises were made, nothing was done as far as that doctor was concerned. Hopefully he will have learned from his error and not treat his patients with contempt.
