Emberton Park Sailing Club 10hr Endurance Race
The 10hr Endurance race in memory of Des Allen Rowlandson, a member of Emberton Park Sailing Club for many years, took place on Saturday 23rd June, which attracted nine teams, the most we have had for a few years. The charity we were supporting this year was the Spinal Injury Research Unit.
The race got underway at 10am and was due to run continuously until 20-00hrs, the boats stopping briefly from time to time as the crews changed over. There was quite a good breeze and the Enterprise of the Bob Grummitt team (Ent'tertainment) took the lead, followed by the Graduate (Roosters) Pete Willcocks team, with the GP14 Luke Fishers team (Fish 'n' Chips) in third spot. Then came David Steel (Vaguely Sailing), Mark Bloomfields (Square Mark) Malcolm Kirby (Scouts), David Coles (Blackshadows) John McFadden (Last Mc C) of the canoe club section, Paul Bocking (Finish or Bust). The first lot of crews sailed for about two hours before coming into the change over area for the next crews to take over, all of the boats were being timed at the end of each lap. This was being fed into a computer programme, which Rob Hemmin was running, and about every two hours a sheet was printed out giving the positions of the teams, as when the boats came into the change over the positions on the water changed, but not necessarily the lap time,
so without the computer it would have been difficult to work out the positions. As the sailing was continuing the onshore team selling tea and cakes was kept busy, as was the galley, doing Beef Burgers and Hot Dogs. They were also busy preparing the supper, which was to follow the sailing, and the sailors were taking a turn in the timing tent, and the non sailors helping in the galley and tea tent, and we also needed a couple of safety boat drivers, just in case anyone got into trouble on the water, which fortunately wasn't needed. The ex Mayor of Olney Paul Watson, whose chosen charity we were sailing for, arrived with his wife Dorothy during the afternoon, and was invited to do a shift in the timing tent, and then Paul did what turned out to be the last three laps in the Fish 'n' chips boat, crewing for Luke Fisher. All the boats kept going for the full ten hours except the Finish or Bust boat, who ran out of crews.
Once all the boats were packed away 45 people sat down to supper, prepared and cooked and served by Marie and her helpers, this was followed by Paul Watson presenting the Trophies and explaining what the Spinal Injury Research unit did, Dorothy then drew the raffle. It proved to be a great event, and with everyone helping to clear away, made it a real club effort, and the club was able to present a good sized cheque for
the Spinal Injuries Research Unit to Paul Watson, for which he thanked the club for their very generous donation.
