Places where you can find those ancient meadows where a jewelled carpet of wild flowers, grasses and bulbs attracting moths, butterflies, bees and hoverflies is surrounded by a mixed hedgerow supporting a host of living mammals and birds are sadly now few and far between.
To recreate this wonderful atmosphere does need a certain amount of room, and in many town gardens, the traditional meadow would not be appropriate.
However, instead of the traditional border, a prairie style planting would attract just as many wild species and would bring a riot of colour to your garden in late summer. Large robust perennials are planted in informal drifts and compete well with mixed ornamental grasses when grown in fertile soil and full sun.
Planted close together, weeds are crowded out and so maintenance is reduced. A strimmer can be used in Autumn to cut down the foliage easily if you like to be neat and tidy, although by leaving the seed-heads you will attract and feed birds during the colder months.
