News from your Olney Town Council
Cherry Fair Saturday 30 June 2007
Unfortunately the weather was not kind to Cherry Fair this year. It rained for long periods whilst setting up the stalls and marquees on The Glebe and, after a dry spell in the early afternoon, showers continued for the rest of the day.
The Year 2 children from Olney Infant School were quite unconcerned that it started to rain just before their Country Dancing routines and gave a splendid display. The Mayor of Milton Keynes, Mike Barry and his wife Cheryl together with the Deputy Mayor of Olney, John Sharp performed the crowning of the Queen and Princesses of Olney. This was followed by the Tug-o-War with the
Rugby Club, who took on the rest of the youth at Cherry Fair managing to win one out of three pulls.
The poor weather obviously affected the income for St Peter & St Paul’s Church on the day, which was a little under £1,700 and just over 15% down on last year. That was still a magnificent result and every credit must go to the stall-holders and helpers for all the hard work they put in to make the day such a success. A special mention must go to Brian Lintern for the innovative way he solved holding up one of the marquees that had one pole missing, by using an adjustable walking stick. K
Church Mice
Church Mice is for pre-school children and runs weekly on Thursdays at St Peter & St Paul’s Church where it recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. On Thursday 5 July the Church Mice Summer Party was held in the Church, to which Olney Town Mayor, John Smail, was invited to attend. There was a fancy dress parade, party songs and games plus cakes and juice, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the children, organisers and the invited guests.
There was a wide range of fancy dress with fairies being the most popular for the girls and pirates for the boys. The Rev. Philip Davies is pictured as an adult pirate alongside John Smail and the Church Mice Leader, Frances Gale. K
