Thought for the month ADMIRATION FOR THE SWANS From the Partnership WHERE CAN WE SIT?
Residents of the Willen Road and Richmond Way Protection Force (Newport Pagnell branch) are on the march again! Our swans are back, nesting in probably one of the most exposed locations in the town, just beneath the river railings near the
Parchment Works.
By the time you read this the cygnets will probably have hatched, to public acclaim and much happiness. Thanks to the care and protection of a large number of people (and, of course, the huge efforts of the swans themselves) this is the umpteenth year we have watched in admiration as these royal creatures have lived out the intimacy of their lives in our gaze.
Thank you to the person who provides them with straw to build up their nest, to the individual who in recent years has provided an information board on swans and their nesting habits, and to the many whose regular checking ensures that any miscreant who dares disturb them will be dealt with summarily. Truly an example of community care at its best.
It's always a risk for the swans, of course. The natural challenges are various – the fish and mink that threaten to seize the tiny cygnets, the likelihood of disturbance, and above all the threat of the flooding river. Two or three years ago the nest was completely destroyed by the sudden rise in river level, and the patient creatures started all over again. But then, why nest in such an exposed place? Clearly the benefits outweigh the risks, and the creatures know that and make their decision.
Now, none of us would ever live our lives in such an exposed way – or would we? With the pressures of money, time and relationships crowding upon us, many may feel that they are being swamped by the rising river of life. Of course, we want to close the front door and hide ourselves away from public gaze. But is there no-one to help?
You may have recently received through your door a card ‘Ever Felt The Need To Pray?’ It offers you the opportunity, even anonymously, to ask for prayer for a personal need for yourself or someone else, or for a need of a local or national nature. Another card is on its way to you in the next few weeks.

Just how many seats are there in the town? Places where one can sit in the sun or, in the case of us old 'uns, rest on our journeys.
Not counting the seats, both old and new, in the town centre – from the fire station to North Square, and St John Street to the Iron Bridge, we found 40! All good or reasonable. And there may be more. Perhaps some are in the wrong place, Perhaps other areas would be improved with a seat. Such as Tongwell Lane where a seat once exisited and on which a Partnership member proposed over 50 years ago. (She said yes and they are still together!)
Bury Field has at least six seats, Castle Meadow five, Ousebank and the Old Cemetery eight. The others are scattered around the town, although some areas may be seat free.
If you feel a seat in a certain place would be nice, inform the Partnership via theTown Council Office. You never know your wish may be granted. K
