Reply to the person who had an issue with Santa’s horn
To the person concerned
Thank you for taking the time to inform me of the annoyance caused to you and your poorly child on the morning of Dickens of a Christmas this year. I must apologise for the use of the car horn on this occasion.
This was caused by the failure of the traditional bell earlier en route around the Town. Whilst in use, the 'clanger' shot out, narrowly missing Santa's little helper's left ear. I understand words were exchanged.
This led to the use of a hand held air horn by Santa. After two or three blasts on this, and bearing in mind the close proximity of said helper’s left ear, the little helper voiced concern to the effect that if Santa used it once more...
Hence the use of the car's horn.
Traditionally a sleigh is used to transport Santa on his rounds. Unfortunately it was unavailable this year, I'm told one of the Reindeer had blown a gasket or something the night previously. We will endeavour to reinstate the sleigh tradition next year, as we have for the last twenty years or so in the Town.
In general the feedback we get from the Town is positive, indeed we have had complaints in the past that people did not hear us, and that their children, or in some cases their grandchildren, missed the visit to their street by Santa. As I am sure you will understand, Those of us who put on such activities for the Townsfolk do it for the pleasure we see it bring to people, not to intentionally annoy them. In years gone by – before my time, I am reliably informed that Santa used to start his rounds way before dawn...
I will ensure that your missive is fed back to all those concerned, so that this annoyance is not repeated next year. Hopefully the Reindeer will be sobered up, er sorry, recovered.
Please feel free to contact me any time re this or any other issue in the Town.
Kind regards, Dave Price 01234 713646

Dear Editor
Olney Town Council has the following comments to make regarding the letter to the Editor from Simon Bull in the January edition of the Phonebox.
Some while ago Olney Town Council looked into the possibility of the Market Place becoming a controlled car parking area. Whilst the cost of monitoring such a car park was fairly substantial there would have been some income to offset against the cost.
Unfortunately, this action would have rendered the Market Place liable to pay rates. In the opinion of Olney Town Council the overall cost, which residents would have had to pay for through their Olney Precept Council Tax, was too high and the proposal was dismissed.
Recognising that there is a car-parking problem in the town, Olney Town Council invited businesses in the town to a meeting to discuss the matter. The decision made as a result of the meeting was to ask Milton Keynes Council, who own the Cattle Market car park, to make it a restricted hours car park. Another measure discussed was the possibility of requesting Milton Keynes Council to make a small area on either side of the High Street a restricted parking zone. However, the meeting agreed that we should see how well the Cattle Market restricted hours parking operated before requesting the introduction of further car parking restrictions on the High Street.
Milton Keynes Council budgeted the expenditure relating to the Cattle Market car park in their 2006/2007 budget but when Olney Town Council chased this matter up with them we were informed that it had been struck out of the budget for this year because of financial constraints.
At the present time a complete traffic management review is being undertaken between Olney Town Council and officers from Milton Keynes Council. It is understood that the officers’ initial draft proposals were forwarded to Olney Town Council in January 2007 for comment and following consideration and possible modification of the draft proposal Milton Keynes Council will prepare a final document to go out for public consultation with the residents of Olney.
Olney Town Council does take the matter of parking in the town seriously and Simon Bull can be assured that Olney Town Councillors do not park their cars in the Market Place all day while on business elsewhere.
Regards, Olney Town Council
