Karen Mason
Buckinghamshire Chamber Orchestra
The BCO will be visiting Olney for the second time on Sunday, 15th October to play a concert in St Peter and Paul’s Church.
Conductor Catherine Rose has lived in Olney for over 20 years. “I love performing in Olney – not least because it means I can just walk round the corner – but mostly because the audience is so warm and appreciative,” she says. “There’s a wonderful acoustic in the Church and it’s a lovely place for the players to come and visit. This time we have a local soloist, too.”
The soloist is Olney resident and local lawyer Karen Mason, who will be
playing the Cor Anglais Concerto by Keith Templeman. “Most people know
the cor anglais from the slow movement of the New World Symphony by Dvorak – the tune from the Hovis ad,” says Karen. “But it’s quite rare to have a whole concerto for it.” Karen is also an oboist – the cor anglais being the larger, deeper-toned relative of the oboe. “I’m delighted to be able to play Keith’s piece again. It’s a huge compliment to have a such a lovely work written specially for you.”
The BCO has already performed this piece – in their home venue of All Saints Church in Gawcott. The composer is the orchestra’s principal cellist and also its chairman. “We love Keith’s music,” says Catherine. “People think of new music as difficult and ugly, but this has lots of gorgeous sounds and lovely melodies. When I told the orchestra we were playing it again, they all said ‘hooray’.”
Keith is pleased to have a second performance. “I wrote this piece particularly for Karen to play,” he says, “and it is wonderful to have such a super soloist. It’s dedicated both to my wife and to my father-in-law, who died shortly before I wrote the piece. The middle movement is a memorial to him. It’s actually very emotional.” Keith has also included a special solo part for the cornet, to be played by his old friend Tony Hindley.
Also in the programme are two rousing overtures: the Overture in the Italian Style No 2 by Schubert and the overture to the opera La Cenerentola (Cinderella) by Rossini. Finally, there is the Pulcinella Suite, an exciting and witty re-working by Stravinsky of dances originally written by 17th-century Italian composer Pergolesi. d
