Cowper and Newton Society Summer Luncheon
Cllr Tony Evans and his wife, Viv, hosted a summer luncheon in the grounds of their home on 8th August. Blessed with a warm sunny day the members of the society enjoyed a splendid lunch and raised valuable funds, which are to go towards The Cowper Johnson Archive Appeal. Peter Bennett, a Trustee of the Museum, pictured on the left in the picture informed Society members of the offer made to the museum of the most important collection of Cowper-related material to come on the market. It consists of 170 letters, 24 books from Cowper’s library, two miniatures by William Blake and 11 objects intimately connected with his life and circle. d
Pictured with Peter are Committee Members, Ann Minney, Joan Parkin, Norika Heyes, Viv Evans, Betty Pibworth and Cllr Tony Evans.
Holiday Bible Club
Monday 7th August was the start of The Combined Churches of Olney, Holiday Bible Club 2006. The Bible Club lasts all week and is for 5 to 12 year olds. So popular is this annual event that 250 children attended this year including some who have moved from Olney but insist their parents bring them back to Olney for the Bible Club. The driving force behind this event, over the past 10 of the 17 years it has been running, is Hilary Terry, the Organising Leader. The theme this year was Time Travellers, which incorporated the Ten Commandments with the children learning two commandments each day. The Mayor and Mayoress, Paul and Dorothy Watson were invited to attend on the Wednesday and were so impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm of the 124 Leaders and Helpers who are needed to run this event. The enjoyment and fun the children were having was evident for all to see. Congratulations to all those Leaders and Helpers for undertaking such a great event each year. d
Four of the Leaders and Helpers pictured from the left are: Martyn Glass, Co-ordinator of the 9–12 year olds; Debbie Sanders, Co-ordinator of the 5–6 year olds, Hilary Terry Organising, Leader and Nicola Farrier, Group Leader with the 7–8 year olds.
Kitchener Centre Garden Party
The Kitchener Centre, which is a Day Care facility for our Senior Citizens, held a Garden Party and BBQ on Thursday 10 August. A dedicated team consisting of the Manager, Helena Newbold, her staff and volunteers run the Centre and they invited the Deputy Mayor, John Smail and the Mayor, Paul Watson to the Garden Party. They, together with around 20 Senior Citizens, enjoyed a splendid lunch and were then entertained for an hour or so by a professional entertainer with singing and dancing. d

Arson and Criminal Damage in our Town
Over the weekend 1st – 3rd September mindless damage was done to the box hedge ‘Olney’ sign at the Whirlypit Roundabout. Petrol was used to torch the box hedge sign and the Police have categorised the damage as arson. The box hedge was planted approximately 12 years ago and has been carefully maintained by Olney Town Council Groundstaff ever since. If you know who the perpetrators are you can email the Council anonymously on patslaney@olneytowncouncil.co.uk
The following Friday 8th September saw further mindless vandalism when one of the brick walls of the Olney Town Football Club stand was smashed to the ground. Similarly, if you know any of those who caused this criminal damage please email the Council. Olney Town Football Club as well as running Senior Teams have Coaches who train in excess of 180 youngsters in its Colts Teams. The Club does not deserve this type of treatment when it does so much for our town. d
OR DAMAGE THE FOOTBALL STAND?
