Olney Bowling Club – 1906-2006
Is it really one hundred years since Bowls has been played at Olney Bowling Club? How time flies when you are having fun. All that remains of the centenary celebrations are the finals weekend 15th–17th September
(which will be over by the time of publication), and the Club's Dinner & Dance to be held at the Working Men's Club on Saturday 11th November.
The last of the prestigious fixtures to be played on our green enjoyed the glorious weather of September's Indian Summer. The first two took place on Sunday 10th September with Gerrards Cross and Princes Risborough involved in both. The morning's benevolent triples final was won by Princes Risborough. In the afternoon there was a spirited and sporting Bucks County Cup Final which was won by Gerrards Cross. Compliments were paid to the high quality of our green during the official speeches at prize giving, but your scribe overheard a private conversation in which one of the visiting club's president's said "This is the best green in the county".
Two days later on Tuesday 12th we entertained the Bucks Women's Bowling Association and although the club turned out a very strong mixed side the ladies of BWBA beat us by ten shots. It was suggested that this was partly due to Maggie Lomax being knocked out early - NO it was not a knock out competition as such; she was struck accidentally by an unguided missile in the shape of a wayward elbow. It landed, allegedly, somewhere between the "solar system' and "deep in the heart of plexus". After a full recovery her play could still take your breath away!
The first of the club competitions final has been played and the new scorpion champions are Dianne Murray and Kenn Mynard. Their shield and miniatures were presented at the Club House on Friday 22nd September. Winners of the other competitions will be listed after presentations at the Dinner Dance.
The club does not shut down at the end of the season as even at 100 years old age has not wearied it. The club house will be open every Friday evening.
The club will be assisting at the Town's Firework Display on November 5th. d
