Fourplay - Already living the rock n roll lifestyle! Interview by Emma Swain - www.mk-music.net
I met up with Fourplay and their manager at the skate park in Newport Pagnell.
It was the Sunday morning after the night before, but we shall leave that story there!
The four guys in the band had played a gig on the Friday before at the Newport Scout Hut and this had proved to be a raucous occasion to say the least.
Joe, Barry, Jarvy & Luke are all Newport Pagnell born and bred and all met at school.
At their young age they actually enjoy the nightlife in MK but do feel there is a lack of places to go to listen to decent music. Hence Ricky Mason, organising them gigs and events for them to play at. A couple of weeks ago they played at the County Arms, New Bradwell and this Friday (23rd June) they will play with All Fall Down, The Mighty Fallen and The Gentlemen’s Club at the Pitz. Barry, the drummer, told me that he thinks there’s a huge rise in young bands recently. The guys go to Ousedale and in the last couple of years the schools bands have risen to about 20 from just 2! The school really encourages its pupils to learn instruments and often allows gigs to be organized by Ricky and his friends. Baz (Barry), Luke & Jarvy crave the limelight, girls and fame that being in a band can bring you, whereas Joe, the lead singer, loves performing. Joe actually started his singing career in a choir, but he actually rocks where Aled Jones could never come close! He hopes to gain a career in music rather than an office or un-creative job. Joe also is very proud of the fact that he was the member who bought Fourplay together. Jarvy told me, with a smirk, that being a musician helped him vent his frustrations of life. How I had forgotten what it is like to be a teenager!
Fourplay previously had 5 band members and were originally called Best Foot Forward.
After a number of member changes they recorded a demo and re-named as Fourplay.
They are extremely happy with how the band is working together nowadays and are working really hard on new material and more gigs. Asking the guys what music they listened to and what influenced them, Luke (bass) admitted that he didn’t listen to much music when he was younger as his brother hogged the stereo listening to the Spice Girls. I joked we had all been there! He then got into listening to the likes of Limp Biscuit, a band he no longer likes. Jarvy (guitar) likes neo-classical music and bands like Queen, Baz is a metaller although he announced “there is always room for Britney & Jessica”. Joe has the most varied music taste and a fond memory of his was driving around with his Dad listening to Elton John and George Michael. For a singer that was a great start for influences.
Having warmed up I coyly asked the guys where they got their name from. Jarvy told me that it came from his Dad! I asked him to go on, intrigued! He told me they had been sitting around one day trying to change the name from Best Foot Forward when Jarvy’s Dad walked in the room and said, “Call your band Fourplay”. He then walked out the room and back in again and said “cos everyone loves it...” Make of that what you will!!! It now of course makes
much sense, as there ARE now four members.
They were quick to tell me that they don’t get stage fright as they all love performing, although they gestured that Jarvy was the “mother worrier” of the band, pre-gig. I was interested to know who wrote their lyrics and what these young minds had to say. Joe has written some but mainly it is Jarvy who writes Fourplay’s lyrics, which are mainly about girls and feelings. The whole band has their favourite Fourplay tracks. Luke’s is Family as he wrote the bass line to it, Joe loves Promises as this gives him memories of the very first band practice they all had together at school.
The future holds great things for these guys, as they are young, talented and committed to being the best they can musically. They practice religiously and are well aware of their stage presence and effect on the audience. They would love to be touring in the next couple of years and admitted they would enjoy supporting Kiss or Oasis!
They are also in the good hands of Ricky who has recently set up In-Form Records with the help of the Mini Dragons Den.
You can also get hold of their demo via their Myspace or In-form Records Myspace.

Firstly they were mentioned to me by my good friend Emma Swain, then I came across them on myspace, I have realised what I have been missing! With awesome tracks ‘Cheshire Cat Smile’ and ‘Lipstick Lickin’ these are the next big thing to come out of Sheffield! Sweet music to your ears, you can get nothing better! Definitely a must see live! Check them out! They’re fab!
Dirty pretty things
‘Bang Bang You’re Dead’ and ‘Deadwood’; two amazing singles from former libertines ‘Dirty Pretty Things’. 2006 is their year and they will be hitting the music scene with more fantastic songs off their debut album
‘Waterloo to Anywhere’.
It’s an amazing cd with fab songs that really lighten up your day! This is one band who I would really like to see in concert this year!!
