TOP TEN TIPS FOR GORGEOUS SKIN – FOR LIFE!
Everybody wants great skin. Our face is the first thing people see when they talk to us. Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with naturally gorgeous skin. We've all had spots or dry and flaky skin and the usual blemishes. Changeable weather, central heating, sun, wind, heat, cold; it all takes its toll on our skin. The good news is there are simple things you can do to help your skin be more healthy and glowing. Here's our tips to help you on your way to a healthy, happy face.
1This may seem obvious but drink water, and lots of it. Our body is made up of mostly water. Water flushes toxins from your
body and drinking water works on your body from within, as well as making you feel better. By drinking water, your skin will be hydrated and more vitalised, resulting in a softer, smoother skin. If you find it hard to remember to drink water, make a point of drinking a glass of water on the hour, every hour to ensure you’re getting enough.
2Get a good night’s sleep. Aim for eight hours, even if you think you don’t need that much sleep. Get into a routine of good sleeping. Try to go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every day. Keep your bedroom as a place where you just sleep or have a cuddle! Try to keep work, computers and TV as things you just don’t do in your bedroom. If your body only sleeps when it’s in bed then that is what your body will be conditioned to do once it gets there! Make your bedroom a tranquil, restful retreat free of clutter and noisy distractions, including the cat! If you enjoy reading, getting through a chapter before lights out will help you nod off.
3Fresh air and exercise. Taking regular exercise is good for you. It makes you feel better, it gets your metabolism going and is an important part of keeping fit and having a healthy body and heart. You don’t need to join a gym to keep fit. Walking doesn’t cost a thing, you can do it anywhere and any time. Plus, it’s easy to incorporate walking into your daily routine. You don’t have to walk, you could try cycling or swimming. Swimming is a great exercise, especially if you have back problems as your body is supported by the water and it’s fun!
4Our skin needs daylight but you do need to protect your face from the sun’s dangerous rays. It isn’t only when you are
abroad that your skin can burn and overdoing it in the sun can cause premature skin ageing and skin cancer. Wear a sun cream of at least SPF15 on your face, even if it doesn’t look that sunny. A hat will shade your face and sunglasses will protect your eyes from the sun’s glare. Keep young children and babies out of the sun completely, especially around midday, the hottest time of the day.
5Be sensible with your alcohol drinking. You don’t have to give up drinking completely but it’s worthwhile being careful. If you’re out for the evening in a social situation, try breaking up your glasses of wine with a glass of water. Alcohol dehydrates your skin as well as your body. And when you get home, drinking two large glasses of water before you go to bed should keep nasty hangovers at bay. If you do have a sore head in the morning, try a slice of lemon in hot water. It’s refreshing as well as being a great internal cleanser for your body.
6Eat a healthy diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables. The more raw, the better. Certain fruits and vegetables contain lots of cancer fighting ingredients, including garlic, soy, tomatoes, cabbage, ginger and broccoli. Aim for five portions of fruit and vegetables daily. They are vital for a healthy body and heart.
7Go easy on the tea and coffee. You don’t have to give up totally, just be sensible and limit yourself to two cups of coffee per day. Try drinking herbal teas if you fancy a hot drink. There are so many varieties around, from Camomile to Raspberry and Echinacea, it won’t be hard to find one you like.
8Cut down on cigarettes or give up completely. You don’t need me to tell you how bad smoking is. It causes cancer and heart disease amongst other things. It makes
your breath and your clothes smell horrible and it costs you a lot of money. Ask your doctor for advice on giving up. Surgeries often have an in house support group for would be non smokers.
9Take care of your skin with a good cleansing routine. Avoid products containing pore clogging petrochemicals and harmful parabens and opt instead for natural skincare that cares for your skin whilst keeping it in good condition. Your skin absorbs up to 60% of what you put on it so choose your skincare products with care. Get into the habit of cleansing, toning and moisturising in the morning and at night. Treat yourself once a week with a face mask while you’re soaking in the bath or use a gentle face scrub no more than twice a week. Use a separate eye cream and ‘pat’ under the eye (no dragging or pulling) using your ring finger only. Be nice to your skin!
10Finally, be happy. Feeling good about yourself and the world about you can
only be a good thing and the way you feel will be reflected in your face. Try not to let things get you down. Take some time out every day for yourself. Be a bit selfish! Don’t let the housework, hubby or the kids get on top of you. Your house doesn’t have to be perfect and there’s always a take away when you’re too tired to cook.
Feeling happy will take years off you. You deserve to be happy. Now get glowing! d
