and your USP doesn’t have to be unique!!
How do you pick USP’s?
The first stage is to identify what unfulfilled ‘gaps’ there are in your industry or local market. These are called 'performance gaps' and they have proved successful for many businesses. For example in the car repair industry, the ‘performance gap’ is that consumers are wary of using car workshops because they feel they might be overcharged. The solution could be to use a USP that promises 'If It Isn’t Broke, We Won't Fix It!'
Another good example is a common ‘performance gap’ in the property market. Many people don’t like to sell their homes through estate agents because they think they do not try hard enough to sell quickly at the right price. As a result, a good USP for an estate agent
would be 'Our 13 Point Power Marketing Plan Gets Your House Sold in 30 Days or Less'.
Your USP Doesn't Have to be Unique
Although a USP is a statement of your uniqueness, a USP doesn't have to be something that is just unique to you...if you announce it first! For instance, if you are a furniture retailer and you devise a USP that promises 'Buy today, we'll deliver it tonight', although other competitors could do the same, if you are the first to use the USP, it becomes associated with your company. This is sometimes called 'pre-emptive marketing.'
Integrate Your USP’s into Everything You Do
Finally, once you developed your
USP’s, you need to integrate then into everything you do. They should be found somewhere in your headlines, ad-copy, direct-mail, emails, websites, signboards, etc. In fact, they should be repeated clearly in all of your marketing communications, your sales presentations and even on your business cards.
