HAVE YOUR SAY
Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor
I would like to publicly thank all those residents of Olney and the villages who sent me by letter, e-mail, phone, or in person, messages of support following my recent election defeat.
I would also like to thank those who put their faith in me by voting for me on May 4th. I did in fact receive more votes than I have ever received before, but this was not enough to stop the Tory tide which swept me from office. I have greatly enjoyed representing the residents of Olney Ward for the past twelve years and I am sure that you will continue to see me around in some capacity or other.
Graham Mabbutt
Dear Editor
I am writing in response to Jayne Cox’s letter last month in which she publicly accused me of watching her from my van while she parked and locked her car in the recreation ground. I would like to set the record straight.
Firstly, to my knowledge Olney Town Council does not own a van so I am a bit confused as to what it is she thought she saw.
During school holidays, the Tennis Club runs coaching sessions for young children. Some of the mothers tend to drive down to the Tennis Club rather than parking in the proper recreation ground car park, which is only approximately 100 yards away. As you can imagine, as well as the children attending the coaching sessions, there are lots of other children running about and riding bikes etc. close to the end of the lane. It is therefore very dangerous for cars to drive down there. That is why there is a sign on the gate, which measures 24 inches x 16 inches quite clearly stating:
Olney Town Council
By laws for the Recreation Ground
No mechanically propelled vehicles are allowed into the recreation ground unless the approval of the Council has previously been given. Bicycles must not be ridden within the ground and dogs brought into the ground must be kept under proper control.
The Council will proceed against offenders.
If this large sign is not noticed by some irresponsible drivers, what chance is there for small young children being seen? It is an accident waiting to happen.
When I saw her car, I presumed she was one of the mothers attending the Tennis Club. In order to prevent anyone else driving down the lane I went and shut the gate. I would not have been doing my job properly had I not done so. However, I DID NOT LOCK IT.
When Richard went down to the recreation ground, her car had gone.
