Spring starts on the 20th
March (astronomically) or a
bit earlier on March 1st (the
meteorological calendar).
I’m going with March 1st –
so that rather chilly day we had on Pancake Day basically heralds the end of Winter. It was also a great day for Olney’s Katie Godof, this year’s winner of the Olney Pancake race in a time of 1 minute 11 seconds; Katie also managed a winter half marathon just a few days later on Sunday 18th, achieving the best time of all the Olney Runners who also competed.
Congratulations must go as well to Liberal’s Gabby Covarrubias, who in 1 minute 8 seconds made it an overall win for Liberal.
In the Olney race we also had Laura Wilkinson, Madeleine Brasier, Deidre Bethune, Allison Souster, Deby Potten, Helen Hines, Gill Hardy, Sophie Merlane, Helen Shakespeare, Penny Giraudeau and Rachael Passee, all members of Olney Runners – what a t lot they are in Olney. And let’s hope this will continue, especially with the town getting three new eating establishments, No26, The Bull Hotel and the soon to be opened Cherry Tree – hold onto your waistlines... Newport Pagnell, not to be left out, has two new eating establishments: Murati’s, an Italian on St John’s Street, and the Saray, a Mediterranean restaurant, which is opening soon. Also one possible new arrival to the town could be Wetherspoons, with their interest in the old Robinson’s site. Newport also has it’s sporting side, or sides I should say, with three Newport Pagnell Town Football Club teams progressing to the semi- nals of the Berks & Bucks county competitions.
Let’s wish them all the best of luck and hope that they do well in their coming rounds, two of which will take place on Sunday 25th February, with the Reserves away on 3rd March, well into Spring! Ron Hall, Editor
