Editorial
It’s that time of the year when we ‘celebrate’ that infamous chemist, Guy Fawkes, who almost brought down the Houses of Parliament. How would England have changed if he had succeeded? We will never know.
Of course Parliament is not just a building but a group of our representatives who often seem to say one thing to get elected and say quite another when they are in power. Still, like Guy Fawkes, they do their best, don’t they?
Talking about chemists, local residents have been receiving letters from a large pharmaceutical company advertising their mail order services. Strange that, as only recently we were all being encouraged to use our local chemist for advice and thereby freeing up time for the doctors surgery. Does the right hand know what the left hand is doing? Of course there is nothing illegal that the company is doing, but it’s the thin edge of the wedge, as businesses are threatened with closure on the high street by large on-line stores. So let’s keep supporting our local shops and pharmacies. More about this on page 16.
Talking local, there is a late night shopping event in Olney on Thursday 1st December, until 8pm, organised by the Chamber of Trade. It’s usually a good night with a lovely atmosphere and your custom is much appreciated by the hardworking shop-keepers. There’s also a shopping evening at the Carlton House Club, Olney, on the 25th November from 7pm onwards in aid of MNDA and Willen Hospice. Keep supporting your local businesses and make Christmas a truly local one. It’s not long now.
So enjoy the November events, it’s going to get a lot busier!
